8) Some concerns about casting out of demons
A) Cast them out when the opportunity arisesIt is common for us to feel uncomfortable when an opportunity arises to cast demons out of someone. We may not feel prepared, or it may be a public place where a deliverance would not be proper. The person needing deliverance could even be a church authority. When it is a church authority an appropriate time is rare. Each and every occasion must be evaluated as to its appropriateness. Do not make a scene that could result in church discipline. This would not benefit you or make deliverance acceptable to those unfamiliar with it.
Many people think that there has to be a formal deliverance session which is overseen by a member sanctioned by the local church. While there should be a group in the local church body that can and do regularly cast out demons, it should not be exclusive. Deliverance is a front line defense which we are all called to, not just a select few! Church authorities commonly want full control over their flock, which ends up limiting its effectiveness. This is not a new problem, Jesus had to deal with it among His apostles. LUK 9:48 and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; for he who is least among you, this is the one who is great." 49 & And John answered and said, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to hinder him because he does not follow along with us." 50 But Jesus said to him, "Do not hinder {him;} for he who is not against you is for you." In the Luke verses we see Jesus telling them that greatness is not associated with how many people one has under their control, but is directly related to allowing everyone else to be greater than them self. Immediately following this attempt by the Lord to instruct them, John brings up an issue about deliverance. John says Awe saw someone casting out demons who does not follow along with us.@ John is complaining that this person was not under their authority and was doing works through Jesus= name. The apostles no doubt thought, "HOW DARE HE CAST OUT DEMONS. He needs to be stopped!@ Jesus however was not threatened by this man casting out demons. He instructs that if someone is not under your authority, yet is doing what is right, this person is not your enemy. So let us all learn the lesson and allow those that so choose, cast out demons. B) Dramatics are not necessary in casting out demonsWhat do I mean by dramatics? There are many people who make the biggest event out of deliverance. They move and speak in such a way that makes those who are uniformed think that they are super spiritual. It is almost like watching a magician perform his act. While commanding the spirit to depart are the most common words There is no need to be dramatic in our prayer or overt in our personality. Just a simple prayer rebuking the wicked spirit is all that is needed. Those that move fluently in deliverance have the gift of discernment operating in their lives, which activates the words spoken. They know the surety of the demonic chains because they can discern them. Those who do not move in discernment may pray over people and their belongings and see little change. They should not be discouraged because they are making a difference even though it is not as apparent as those who are more skilled in deliverance. C) Don=t think bad about your Christian brother or sister who are boundYoung and mature Christians are vulnerable to demonic possession and will often take judgmental stands against those they believe are possessed. The word AYoung@ does not refer to length of time in Christ, but of the maturity of a Christian. Everyone battles the devil every day, and there are times we become passive and satan just beats us up. It is during these times of passivity that we often fall into sin, and become bound by a demon. This does not make us an apostate, it makes us a wounded Christian in need of help. Every Christian was bound at one time or another and will likely be bound again. GAL 6:1 Brethren, even if a man is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; {each one} looking to yourself, lest you too be tempted. We should love these wounded brethren enough to see them totally restored. God does not show us people's problems so that we can speak bad about them, but for us to pray for their healing. The spirit of love demands that we go the extra mile and do what we can for our fellow Christians in need. Healing |
